Appleの共同創業者スティーブ・ウォズニアックのギーク的人生観

アップル・コンピュータ社を作ったのは2人のスティーブである。現CEOのスティーブ・ジョブズとスティーブ・ウォズニアックである。アップル社のApple IIはIBM PCが出るまではパソコンの代名詞であった。ウォズニアックはそのApple IIのハードウェアとソフトウェアをすべて作った人物である。最近、自叙伝「iWOZ: Computer Geek to Cult Icon」を出版し、それに際してラジオ番組にいくつか出演している。その中で10月5日放送のOn Pointで話していたことは特に興味深かった。ギークとしての人生観を大いに語っている。以下で、MP3ファイルが入手できる。
また、Science Fridayに9月29日に出演し、やや技術寄りの話をしていて、以下で聞くことができる。
以下、このブログ記事ではOn Pointでのウォズニアックの発言の中で印象に残った部分を紹介する。興味を持たれた方には、番組を聞いてウォズニアックの言葉を聞いてもらいたい。

Apple IとApple II

印象に残った発言を紹介する前に、背景知識としてApple IとApple IIについて紹介しておく。両番組の中でウォズニアックが適宜述べていることではあるが。
Apple IIの原型となったApple Iはキーボードと画面表示機能を備えた最初のパソコンと言える。それ以前の個人用のコンピュータは、入力装置はトグルスイッチや16進数キー、出力装置は発光ダイオードやプリンタであった。Apple Iはパソコンの完成品ではなく、マザーボードだけが売られていた。パソコンとして使うには、ケース、電源、キーボードを調達して組み立てる必要があった。
シリコンバレーにあったHome-Brew Computer Club(自家醸造コンピュータクラブ)のメンバーだったウォズニアックは、クラブのメンバーが自分たちで作るパーソナル・コンピュータを設計しクラブで発表した。それが後にApple Iとなった。

プライドの源泉

I don't care about being known for having started Apple. For having started personal computer. But having done excellent engineering on those products, I definetely want to be known for.
私にとってアップル社を創業したことや最初のパーソナルコンピュータを作ったことは重要ではない。それらの製品の素晴らしい設計を成し遂げたことについて、私は認めてもらいたいと強く望んでいる。

生涯技術者として生きる

I made up my mind. I would stay an engineer at the bottom of the org chart for the rest of my life. I would never run a company. I couldn't be political. I was too kind and caring to fire people, to tell them their work was lousy and critisize them and roverride*1 one person with another's idea. I just couldn't do that sort of things
私は心に決めた。残りの一生、組織図の一番下で技術者として居続ける。会社の経営は決してしない。私は政治的にはなれない。私は優しすぎで次のようなことはできない。従業員を首にしたり、仕事がぞんざいだと指摘したり批判したり、ある人を別の人のアイデアに従わせたり。こういったことは、私にはどうしてもできない。

アップル社創業

Starting Apple was very tough. I designed these computers not to start a company. I passed out schematics, code listings, everything necessary for you to build your own computer at our computer club. Passed them out for free. And gave them away as a way to say you can have your own computer. Here is the way to build a complete computer at the lowest possible cost imaginable. And that was my intent.
Steve Jobs did come along and say why don't we start a company. And just to have a company of our own to save people some time.
アップル社を創業するのは大変だった。私がそれらのコンピュータ(Apple I)を作ったのは、会社を創業するためではない。回路図、プログラム・コード、自分たちのコンピュータ・クラブのメンバーが自分でコンピュータを作るのに必要なものをすべてを配布した。無料で配布した。自分のコンピュータを持てるということを伝える手段として、贈ったのだ。これが、完全なコンピュータを考え得る限り最も安価に作る方法である、と。それが私の意図だった。
スティーブ・ジョブズが現れて、会社を作ろうと言った。皆の時間を節約するために、自分たちの会社を持とうと。

幸福について

I had cruised my own happiness. Everyone can develop their own keys to happiness. And I had my keys when I was about 20 years old. Thought out some philosophies about. One of them was I was a good person. Very, you know, trustworthy, caring, generous, all those kinds of good attributes. That if somebody is bad to me still I'm nice to them. And you know what? Those keys I told myself make me happy. And make me happy for life. Then basically you can be happy. You don't have to worry things have to turn out a certain way or you'll be upset. 'Cause then you have to be upset all the time. So once I had those keys, I was happy long before Apple for the rest of my life. And happiness is how you gonna measure your life. Not how may yachts you have, what's your title, fancy clothes, big salary, and you know, big title, not even grades in school. It's really just how much, how happy you use your walk around every day.
私は自分なりの幸福を謳歌してきた。誰でも自分自身の幸福への鍵を涵養することができる。私は自分の鍵を20歳のときに手に入れた。その哲学を考えた。その中の一つは、自分は善人であるということだ。大いに信頼でき、思いやりがあり、気前がよく、そういったよい特質だ。自分に敵意を持つ人にも私は親切にする。これらの鍵は私を幸せにする。一生幸せにしてくれる。つまり人は幸福になれるのだ。物事は特定の方向に進むべきで、そうならないと取り乱す、そのようにする必要はない。そうしていたら、いつも取り乱していなければならない。それらの鍵を手に入れてからは、アップル社を作る以前から、私は死ぬまで幸福だ。そして、幸福が人生を計る尺度だ。ヨットを何艇持っているかではない。肩書きが何かでもない。素敵な洋服でもない。高い給料でもない。称号を勝ち取ることでもない。学校の成績でもない。毎日をいかに幸福にすごしているか、それだけなのだ。

パソコンに日々助けられている視覚聴覚障害者に感謝されたのに答えて

I have to tell you. I was not inspired by having a company, by having money. It was by the other socially minded young people in our Home-Brew Computer Club. 500 people talking about how we gonna help the world, how we gonna empower even the small guys to basically have a tool that gets further in life than even the tools the company can get them. They can kind of turn the ropes and give them more calculating power than the companies.
And of course, helping people like yourself who, you know, who really need the assistance, we had the ability to design things that would do that. That's absolutely the inspiration that just drove my heart. Every two weeks, it was the most important day in my life to go to that club. Where people talked about how are we gonna be helpful to others. That's why I gave away circuits and schematics for free. Because it was my way to help. When we came up with Apple II, boy, we made the documentation so open that others, you were one of them, could learn computers, learn how to build, how they work. So much documentation 'cause I wanted to help others learn the way I had learn quitely shyly not asking others not having teachers.
言わせてもらおう。私は会社を持つこと、お金を儲けることに触発されたのではない。社会に関心を持ち、若い、自家醸造コンピュータクラブのメンバーたちに触発されたのだ。500人のメンバーが世界にいかに貢献するかを語っていた。一人一人はちっぽけな人々にいかに力を与えるか。会社が与えてくれる道具より、もっと人生に役立つ道具を提供することで。状況を変えて、会社が与えられるより多くの計算能力を手に入れることができるようにすることで。
そして、もちろん、あなたのような本当に手助けを必要とする人を手助けするものを設計することが私たちにはできた。それがまさに、私の心をゆり動かしたインスピレーションである。2週間に1回のクラブの集まりに参加する日は人生で最も重要な日だった。そこでは、メンバーが他のメンバーをいかに助けるかを語っていた。だから、私は回路図を無料で渡したのだ。なぜならそれが私が人を助けるやりかただったからだ。Apple IIを出したとき、情報をすべて公開した。他の人がコンピュータのことを学べるようにするために。どうやって作るか、どうやって動作するかを学ぶために。大量の資料を公開したのは、他の人が学ぶのを助けたかったからだ。他の人に聞くこともなく、教えてくれる人もいない状態で、静かに内気に学んだ自分のような人を助けるために。

若いギークへのアドバイス

Follow your heart. Have some dreams. Know who you are. Don't let people tell you, you know, here's the path, you've got to follow to success in your life. You've got to go these schools, these classes. You should've got to do this kind of work. You've got to move up the ladder like this. If whatever you feel like doing, if you have the passion to do something and succeed, you will.
自分の心に従え。夢をいくつか持て。自分自身を知れ。他人に自分の道を指示させるな。「これが人生を成功に導く。」「これらの学校に進んで、これらの講義を取れ。」「こういう種類の仕事をするべきだった。」「人生の階段はこのように上らなければならない。」そういうことは言わせるな。何であれやりたいことがあり、それをやり成功する情熱があれば、成功する。

*1:overrideと自動車のRoverからの造語だと思われる。ローバーで踏み潰すという感じか。
