PTSDは「心的外傷 後 ストレス障害」ではなく「心的外傷ストレス 後 障害」ではないか

PTSD(post-traumatic stress disorder)に対する日本語は「心的外傷　後　ストレス障害」となっている。この日本語に違和感を感じる。「心的外傷」の後に起こる「ストレス障害」という意味になるからである。PTSDとは「心的外傷ストレス」(traumatic stress)の後に起こる「障害」ではないか。したがって、PTSDに対する日本語は「心的外傷ストレス　後　障害」とすべきではないか。
少なくとも一般の英語の話者はPTSDをP(TS)Dと捉えている。英語学者に以下のように質問してみた。

This might be more of a question to the psychiatric community than the English language community, but let me ask.
I'm bugged by the term "post-traumatic stress disorder." Because the Japanese phrase for this term doesn't sound right to me. The Japanese phrase clearly means a "stress disorder" happening after a trauma. I suspect PTSD means a disorder happening after a traumatic stress. The Japanese equivalent of the "post-" prefix is a suffix. So a word-by-word translation preserving the word order of the Japanese phrase is "trauma-post stress disorder." I suspect the correct translation is "(trauma stress)-post disorder." Because of the way Japanese language constructs this sort of noun phrase, post-TRAUMATIC stress disorder or post-TRAUMATIC STRESS disorder matters.

I've always assumed the "traumatic stress" is one unit -- "after stress that is traumatic" rather than a "stress disorder."

参照されているニューヨークタイムズの記事は題名からして「Purple Heart Is Ruled Out for Traumatic Stress」だし、記事中にはdisorderなしで「post-traumatic stress」が2回使われている。筆者が(PT)(SD)と捉えているとしたらこれらは有り得ない。
更に調べてみたら、「日本トラウマティック・ストレス学会」(http://www.jstss.org)があった。この学会の名前からして専門家もP(TS)Dと捉えていると思える。しかしその学会のウェブページではPTSDを「外傷後ストレス障害」としている。問い合わせフォームがあったので「外傷ストレス　後　障害」ではないかと質問をして、回答を待っているところである。
